Diabetes, obesity and hypertension are all constituents of Metabolic Syndrome (MBS), which has developed into a modern day epidemic. MBS covers the fast growing problem of heart and vascular disease and other risk factors resulting from excess food consumption in relation to bad lifestyle habits. It is becoming increasingly accepted that food, and particularly an excess of food, plays a major role in the development of the risk factors associated with metabolic syndrome.
In this project, bioactive peptides are developed, that can play a role in the prevention and treatment of a number of these factors. High potential peptides will be selected from different protein sources, with milk and egg protein serving as the main sources, that have an effect on the mechanism of one of these factors. These so-called protein hydrolysates will be incorporated in food products and nutraceuticals. These products will be tested in human studies in order to demonstrate their functionality, for instance effects such as reduced blood pressure and insulin resistance.
These products with a scientifically grounded health claim can support people in an early stage of decreasing health, and have a proven therapeutic effect on the prevention of heart and vascular disease.
