Active Food Ingredients

Projects

Some of our projects:

Obesity: Protein-rich food in the battle against obesity

Nine companies and knowledge institutes in the East of The Netherlands joined forces in the battle against obesity. In doing so, the participants develop and produce healthy, protein-rich foods and ingredients which can then be used in carefully monitored diet programmes. A test is developed on the basis of biomarkers in order to provide personalised dietary advice.

MBS: Bioactive peptides as nutraceutical and functional food ingredients for combatting risk factors of Metabolic Syndroom.

Partners: Agrotechnology & Food Innovations BV, FrieslandCampina

Diabetes, obesity and hypertension are all constituents of Metabolic Syndrome (MBS), which has developed into a modern day epidemic. MBS covers the fast growing problem of heart and vascular disease and other risk factors resulting from excess food consumption in relation to bad lifestyle habits. It is becoming increasingly accepted that food, and particularly an excess of food, plays a major role in the development of the risk factors associated with metabolic syndrome.

One minute egg: A method for cooking a soft-boiled egg within a short amount of time

An egg is an absolute commodity product that is primarily price-driven. In this respect, the partners in this project went in search of innovative product-market combinations as a differentiation strategy. Market research showed that less people are eating breakfast and more people are eating on the go. In order to still be able to serve an egg, preferably also soft-boiled, a method had to be found that would enable an egg to be quickly and easily boiled.

Macular Degeneration: The development of a product for the prevention of Macular Degeneration.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the most common cause of visual impairment with people aged 55 years and older. AMD also has a significant impact on the quality of life because it leads to blindness. A large blind spot occurs in the center of the visual field and one can no longer recognize faces or take part in traffic.  In Europe alone there are already 5,5 million people diagnosed with AMD. It is estimated that there are a 100 million people in the EU and US with an increased risk of AMD, or already having the first symptoms without knowing it.
